Amy at Never a Dull Moment gave me a heads-up about an awesome summer reading program put on by Barnes and Noble. Click on the ‘Reading Journal’ link on the right side of the page, and download a page for your child to fill out.
Participation is easy.
1. Kids read any eight (8) books of their own choosing – library books, books borrowed from friends, or books bought at Barnes & Noble.
2. Ask them to write about their favorite part of each book in the Summer Reading Journal. A parent or guardian must sign the journal after each entry.
3. Bring the completed Summer Reading Journal to a Barnes & Noble bookstore between May 29th and September 2nd, 2007.
4. B&N will give them a coupon for a FREE book!
Kids need to be in 1st through 6th grade, and they can turn in up to two journals. I only have two kids in this age range, but I’ll probably let all the kids fill out logs this summer and then buy the other kids’ ‘reward’ books myself. Thanks, Amy!
I'm Mary, wife to John, and mom to 10 kids ages 3-20. Six of them were adopted, from Ethiopia and Korea. I spend my days applying Bandaids, reminding kids to use their inside voices, persuading kids fractions are useful, cooking spicy ethnic food, and snapping gig after gig of pictures. Very late at night, I write about it all.
I just read your blog. Wow ten children, you are blessed. I am in the process of designing a site where I will be posting my stories that I have written for my girls over the last eighteen years. I also have a web site where I offer free artwork.

What amazes me is that eight books, over how many months!?!?, is considered rewardable. I’m not trying to get preachy or anything, but when I was a kid I poured through books in the summer!
Our library is doing a reward program for adults. If you can read four books throughout the year you can get a prize.
I think it’s somewhat sad that books have moved so far down on the list of “fun things to do” that we have had to lower our expectations for kids and adults.

I am so glad to learn about this. Thank you. This will be our third reading program for the summer. I agree with Amy that these reading programs don’t require a lot of reading to get a prize. That’s why we are doing three now. My kids love to read and go to the library. It will be a good thing to do this summer.
