Last week I got another Nick Jr. preview DVD. This one is called Nihao Kai-Lan and is the premier epidsode of a new series slated to begin on Nickelodeon beginning February 7th. The aim of the series it to teach Mandarin Chinese to young children, and it looks to be a lot of fun.
We are floating in various languages around this house –currently various people in our family are learning English, Korean, Spanish, and/or Amharic. I am feeling like I don’t need to add one more language around here. But this new series sounds like awesome, especially for those of you with kids from China. So I would like to give away this DVD to one of you! If you are interested, please leave a comment, and on Monday I’ll pick a winner to receive the DVD. And it is not mandatory, but I would love it if the winner would post a review of the show on your own blog!
Definetly sounds like something my lil hearing impaired (48% deaf) would enjoy. He loves speaking in spanish!
With a sweet ladybug from China celebrating gotcha day on January 16th, we’d love the DVD. Hope we win. Thanks for your blog.
Nee How Mrs. Owlhaven,
Sounds like fun!
I would love this DVD for my daughter from China.
I too am interested. We don’t get Nickelodeon. I wonder if they will sell the DVDs. That’s funny because I was just researching a way for my family to learn some Mandarin. We have been waiting for our little girl (our first adoption) almost two years now and I guestimate meeting her sometime this summer. I also have a 3 1/2 and almost 5 year old at home. Thanks for your blog. I haven’t commented before but I read it faithfully. Your family looks like a blast.
Ooooooo! We’ve been waiting for this show to come out for a while. It was going to start in October but they pushed it back to coincide with Chinese New Year. Our Callie (from China) is a huge Dora fan so I know she’s gonna love this one and I’m excited that we can all learn some Mandarin together as a family. Even though Callie is Cantonese! π
Cool! I’m interested too! It would be nice to teach the older children a little Mandarin before they get their baby sister from China.
I am so glad you wrote about this! I lived in Hawaii during high school and took Mandarin there … and would love to start teaching the language to my twins. Oh how I wish I had kept taking it in college too!
I’d love to share this with my neighbors! They adopted their baby girl last spring (I got to go to China as a travel companion!). Hope I win!
Abby (my daughter from China) just came in the kitchen this afternoon and said, “Ni Hao! That means hello!” We currently have two Chinese videos. They’re good, but we could always use reinforcement. And we don’t have cable so we can’t watch the show. But we have heard great things about it.
My 7 year old from China would love the DVD. She has some severe learning disabilities but being a visual learner the preschool videos really seem to reach her.
We have a daughter from China and are waiting for another little one from China. Since our two year old loves Dora, she’ll love this.
Hi Mary! Well, I’d love the DVD, but not for me, for my friend who just brought her little girl home from China this summer and who is homeschooling her other children. I think it would be a great thing for all of them to learn together and sometimes when their daughter is very fussy, she will quiet when her name is said in Chinese and a few other Chinese words-it would be great for them to use this as a family bonding tool π
This sounds like fun. My youngest five are adopted from China. Shortly after I came home with the newest one in August, three of the older ones attended a Chinese camp, put together by a fellow homeschooler. They would come home speaking Mandarin, and our little girl (2 1/2) would correct their pronunciation. I keep meaning to have them work on their Mandarin, but it’s hard to get to it. Maybe it’s not too late to make it a New Year’s Resolution.
Please enter me as well. We’re waiting to bring our daughter home from China and we’re just about ready to begin home schooling again – what a perfect combination!
Oh, my girls have been waiting for this show to begin! We’d just love a DVD!
Oh! That would be so cool!
My son has PDD-NOS (and my younger son has Autism) and is hyperlexic and has a real knack for picking up languages. He is learning French and Spanish at the moment and wants to learn Mandarin, since a few kids at school are from China. Plus, this year, they are doing a theme unit on China. Count me in!
PS – thanks for offering.
Hi Mary!
My husband spent time on the mission field in Taiwan. He knows some Mandarin, but we were looking for fun ways to teach the kids Chinese and would LOVE to try these. Count me in!
P.S. I know someone else already asked, but do you know if these will be available for sale? Thanks!
We have been anxiously waiting for this series to air, as all EIGHT of my kids speak a smattering of Mandarin! The girl who is the voice of Kai-Lan even lives in our state! I have been amazed at how all 5 of our Ethiopian children love learning Mandarin!
Can’t wait to see this show!! They are all huge fans of the PBS series, Sagwa!
Ni-Hao Mary!
I would love a copy of this DVD. I am the mama to 4 internationally adopted children….the youngest of whom just turned 2 in a Chinese social welfare institute. We are hoping that by march she will be joining two older brothers from Vietnam (they are 5 and 3) and an older sister from China who just turned 4! I know all of my kiddos would enjoy this, as the older two loved learning some Vietnamese (and Chinese) phrases when we were in Hong Kong and Vietnam adopting our now three year old last year…and it could be helpful in getting us all ready for little sister to finally get here.
Not sure if we will have access to watching this show regularly, as we don’t have cable, and the kids watch only PBS.
I have a dear friend with a little girl from China and another on the way. I know she’s anticipating this series and it would be great fun to be able to give her your preview DVD. Maybe she, or whomever receives the DVD, could guest blog a review here.
Thanks for all you do!
Sounds like a good thing. Would love to get a copy.
Love your blog….would love a copy. My sister-in -law has a little girl from China and would love to use this for her.
I’d love to have this for my girls. We have two from China, age 4 and 7, and are in the process of adopting a 10 year old girl from China. We’re doing everything we can to learn Mandarin as quickly as possible so we can communicate with our new daughter!
I am extremely interested. My daughter is from China and right now we are not in an area condusive to keep up the language. We do have the Mei Mei tapes but we don’t have regular TV or cable at all. We only use DVD and VCR machines. I am too cheap (can’t afford it actually) to pay for cable and I don’t have an antennea hooked up.
Please Please Please.
Beverly
Count me in, especially now that we have our own Mandarin phrases spinning around the house. π It’d be nice to know what my daughter is saying when she tells me off in Mandarin, but I don’t suppose they will cover that on a Nick Jr. show – at least I hope not.
Wow! I’m just jazzed that it will be something besides Spanish! Not that I have anything against the Spanish language, but Dora makes me want to hit myself repeatedly over the head with a blunt heavy object.
Hi, Mary. I just found your site a couple of days ago and added it to my favs. Thanks!
I would like this video for my sister. She home schools all but one of her children and five are adopted from China. She and her husband are in the process of adopting another little one from China with special needs (toes missing). This one will be child number 9. Boy, could she use the help! She speaks some Mandarin, enough to get by every other year or so, when she and her husband visit the White Swan Hotel.
Her kids are Ryan (17), Taylor (13), Jillian (9, Chinese), Molly (7, Chinese), Chloe (5, Chinese, msg. toes), SaraGrace (4, Chinese, heart condition repaired), Jordan (nearly 2, Chinese, missing 1/2 an ear), and Jacob ( 18 mos., Guatemala). She is the most amazing mom I have ever had the pleasure of watching.
My son might be entering a magnet school next year with full immersion in Mandarin Chinese. I would love this DVD to help the whole family.
My daughter and I have watched Kia-Lan every day since she has been on , sometimes twice a day . My daughter is from China and we try to learn as much as we can about manderine . We celebrate Chinese New Year , Dragon Boat Festival , Harvest Moon Festival , Lantern Festival etc.. I would love to win a DVD .
