Our garden in June

June 29, 2008 by Mary Owlhaven

I thought you might like a look at our garden this year. It is about 50 feet wide and 120 feet long. Things are growing pretty well. Here you can see the whole garden with a couple of the kids hard at work. We have a 30-minute weeding ‘party’ every morning Monday through Friday to keep things in line. It really helps to get out there on a regular basis– and to have a lot of people to help with the work.

You can see cabbage on the left. The two rows of tiny plants are peppers, both sweet and hot. Then there are our obligatory 100 tomato plants, and a good sized corn patch. The corn is almost too tall to step over, which is good because that also means it is getting close to the stage where it is obviously winning over the weeds, and we can content ourselves with weeding only the edges of the patch where we can get to them.

Here is a picture of one of our grape vines. It is a Concord grape that is growing at one end of the garden and stretches further down the fence every year. That one plant is probably covering 30 feet of fence this year. Good thing– we ran out of jelly this winter, and I am hoping to make a LOT more this year.

The apples (above) and the plums (below) are looking wonderful this year. I sprayed the apples a couple weeks ago and need to do it again soon. I try to spray about every 3 weeks during the summer. Most of our garden is organic, but there’s no such thing as a good organic apple. Plums, on the other hand, are fine without spray.

Below is one of the two volunteer zucchinis. It has a couple of zucchinis on already, tiny 3 inch long babies that will probably be perfect by the end of the week.

The cabbage is looking wonderful. Probably within a week I’ll be picking the first one.

I didn’t get pictures of our strawberries or our chard, both of which we’ve already been eating. Later this week I’ll be sharing a recipe using that chard. But for now I am headed off to bed!

100 tomato plants? You must supply the whole town?! We have 5 plants each year and end up giving away so many. Although I don’t can them like I’m guessing you do. I’ll be showing this post to my husband, the garden freak, and he will be jealous!

What an awesome, gorgeous garden! The hubby and I have been bouncing around the idea of a garden for awhile… Like Headless Mom, this post just might push him over the edge!

What a wonderful garden! My green thumb is now greener with envy! LOL Just kidding!

Seriously though, if we had the space, I’d have a similar garden. I’ve had to not have a garden this year due to the severe drought we’ve been experiencing. Not allowed to water, not even hand watering, for most of the spring this year. Bummer. But we had rain barrels installed recently so next year’s garden is already being planned! LOL

From one gardener to another….beautiful job! Isn’t wonderful to put the hard work into jars and bags? It always tastes so good in the winter and hey, with the rising cost of food, it certainly helps out with grocery bill. Oh, I made your strawberry rhubarb jam, yummy! We found it super good on vanilla ice cream :) Right now, I am knee deep in cherries…picked 9 gallons last week and now my second tree is ready. Praise God for a bountiful harvest!

WOW!! That is a HUGE garden. I thought my moms is big and it is about an 1/8 of yours. LOL. How do you make your own jelly? That sounds pretty interesting.

Someday I’m going to have one of those! It’s beautiful!

I am green with envy! Your gardens always look so wonderful!

You’ve got a gorgeous garden. I am impressed by the size – we’ve never had such a big area to work on… and you should be all in tomatoes when it’s a harvest time… What are you doing with them – canning?

  9. on June 30, 2008 at 8:37 am Holly

Wow! What a great garden! Nothing beats home grown veggies, a store bought tomato just can’t compete! Our garden is a fraction of the size of yours, but I love it. It is always a joy to work outside.

    Now that’s a garden. Wonderful!

That is one huge garden. We only have about 6 tomato plants. But it is just me and my hunter.

Oh, you so just took me back in time to the garden I grew up with.
I’ve tried square foot gardening for a while but I think I’m going back to the good old rows.
    You Grow Girl! Awesome garden.

It all looks wonderful – but the result of LOTS of work I am sure.

    Thanks for sharing.

Now I know why you have so many kids… :)

The garden looks gorgeous and you’re giving hope to someone who wants to garden next year, even if I’m just looking at a much smaller area. (Hey, I’ve only got 3 helpers to work with and my thumbs aren’t green. I’m going to have to work my way up to it!)

    beautiful, Mary!!!!

    So beautiful and bountiful!

I’m really missing my daddy and his green thumb and generous spirit.
We haven’t had a garden since he passed on.

And I haven’t canned since the youngest son graduated high school.

Thanks for sharing. You have a generous spirit yer own self.

Beautiful! I don’t know how you keep up with all of that. Our garden is just a 1/4 the size of yours and it keeps me hopping.

One tip I learned from our older neighbor though is when you mow your lawn, pile the grass clippings in your garden (especially in the paths) and it will help control the weeds. In the fall just till the grass in, it adds a lot of nutrients and fluff to your soil.

    So jealous! Looking good!

Not envious of your weeding party. Thankfully, you have many hands to help.

I let the vegetable garden go this year. So the land can rest, I tell myself. Now, hubby and I are discussing building our long dreamed about garage overlapping the current garden area. So maybe had a plan in the no garden decision this year after all.

Yours looks fab. keep up all your hard work.

Not sure if you’re aware there’s a fig that’s hardy to zone 5/6 without winter protection. I bought one myself this year and am just waiting for the fresh figs to ripen. It’s also smaller than most fig trees at 10′. Thought it would be a favorite of your kids if you had one.
Your garden is bigger than my yard and so I’m in awe of the work.

We put in a large (well, to us–not as large as yours!) vegetable garden this year. It’s our first year in this house, so we were excited. I’ve got lots of tomatoes coming already–from 16 tomato plants. I’d love to read your tomato sauce recipe(s) if you’re willing to share!

Wow. I’m inspired. Maybe next year. I spent the first 12 years of my life as a sharecropper on someone’s farm and swore I’d never garden again, as we tended to 3 gardens that were an acre each.

Maybe I can handle a small one? :)

What a beautiful garden. Some of my fondest memories as a child is helping my grandma on a summer day in her garden.

Wow. Wow. Wow. I hope to have a big garden like this some day. I am growing some potted tomato plants, some herbs, and strawberries scattered throughout my backyard, but I don’t have the room for any more. Some day!

Oh your garden looks WONDERFUL!. I am looking forward to your chard recipe. We grew some last year, but had no idea what to do with it.

Wow…what a beautiful garden! I have garden envy.
