Saturday Contest (with a PRIZE, people!)

October 14, 2006 by Mary Owlhaven

Finally, the day you’ve been waiting breathlessly for ALL WEEK LONG–  Mary’s Saturday contest! Well, your wait is over!

As I mentioned the other day, I finally got the last of my canning done. So here’s the game.  Instead of the classic ‘how many beans in the jar?’ game, I want you to guess how many jars I have in my pantry.

You’ll want to look again at the photo in this post of my pantry a couple weeks ago.  If you want, you can just hazard a guess from there.  Or you can be ‘scientific’ and also go through all my canning posts since July where I talk about things I’ve canned.

You have until Wednesday evening to submit your guess.  I’ll announce the winner Thursday morning.  The winner will be the person who guesses the closest.  If two people are equally close, the winner will be the person whose comment showed up FIRST in my comments.

The PRIZE is a pair of movie tickets  good at any AMC, Loews, Cineplex Odeon, Magic Johnson, or Star Theaters. (No expiration date.  Only good in the US, and only good at the listed theaters.)

So guess away!!

    Blessings

    My guess is 307.

I haven’t had coffee yet, and I’m stressin’ over the “Each shelf holds about 33 quart jars. I stack most of my pint jars two high. ” staement. Does it mean you have 33 total on the shelf, or 33 AND you stack them two high?

    Oh well, I need coffee…
Very fun, Mary. Thanks for waking up my brain.

    I’m going to guess 313.

    318 🙂

  7. on October 14, 2006 at 9:04 am Owlhaven

Homeschool Mama– I meant that some of the shelves are full of quart jars, somewhere around 33 quarts per shelf. But some of the shelves also contain pint jars, which I stack two high. Even *I* would have a hard time guessing accurately how many I have. That’s why I commissioned my 16 year old to make an official count the other day..

    Have fun guessing!

    Mary

  8. on October 14, 2006 at 9:20 am Alison

You were a canning fool–in the best sense–so I’m going with 419 jars.

  9. on October 14, 2006 at 9:21 am Mary

    342. I can always use a couple of movie tickets!

  10. on October 14, 2006 at 9:25 am Brooke

    my guess is 306!

  11. on October 14, 2006 at 9:56 am Holly

    My guess is 473.

  12. on October 14, 2006 at 10:03 am Tanya

    I’m going to guess 275 🙂

  13. on October 14, 2006 at 10:27 am Heidi

At first I would have thought you had more than 5 times what I did just from the amount of space they took up. Then I noticed that most of yours are canned in quarts while most of mine were pints. Anyway, fun!

    My guess is 287.

  14. on October 14, 2006 at 10:50 am fiddledeedee

Oh, I am such a sucker for a contest. I’m going to guess 294. Excellent job. You are very organized!

I’ll go with 480. I didn’t even look at anyone else’s guesses first…hope I didn’t land square on top of somebody.

  19. on October 14, 2006 at 11:58 am selene

    Hi I am guessing 268…
I must say you are amazing.

  20. on October 14, 2006 at 12:34 pm Heidi

Oohh ooh can I change my guess? Instead of 357 I’d like to guess 386

  21. on October 14, 2006 at 12:34 pm Bethany

I wish I knew how to can!
    I’ll guess 311 cans. 🙂

  25. on October 14, 2006 at 2:22 pm rachel

    I’m guessing 366.
No matter what, you are an inspiration! I am hoping to be well enough to have a garden and can next year!

  26. on October 14, 2006 at 2:37 pm carol

i would like to guess 370.

  27. on October 14, 2006 at 3:01 pm esperandoaiyasu

My grandma, who is 94, canned 50 quarts of pickles this fall. If she can do that many, I think you can do 650. So, that is my guess. Hmmm. then you would have to use nearly 2 jars a day to use it up… but anyway, let’s go with it.

    315

  38. on October 15, 2006 at 8:55 am Wendy

277 (though I am probably way under).

You did good, Mary! 🙂 I didn’t can a darn thing. I don’t even know how to can, for that matter. Something I will tackle next year after my girls get home!

  39. on October 15, 2006 at 11:56 am Karen

    423

Well done! However much they are., I am totally impressed.
I didn’t do any canning this year.

    Karen

  40. on October 15, 2006 at 6:38 pm Maria

This is a wild guess, but I sure could use those tickets. Mrs. DOF sent me your way and my guess is 279

  41. on October 16, 2006 at 4:18 am Kelli

    I say 658

  42. on October 16, 2006 at 10:01 am Joanne

313 No matter what the real number is, that is a LOT of canned goods.

  43. on October 16, 2006 at 2:13 pm GiBee

    255 — that’s my guess.

But, I don’t want the movie tickets … I want tips (okay — LESSONS) on how to can some homemade BBQ sauce. I cook the suace, so I think it would be a hot canning method, but not sure. Any tips would be appreciated!

  44. on October 16, 2006 at 2:23 pm Avery

    400

  45. on October 16, 2006 at 2:27 pm Avery

counting the ones in the picture I came up with 392 but that was before you caned a few more items, and I am guessing you addeded to it

if your closet is full I am guessing you can get close to 600 in there all on the shelves (using small jars)

none of those theaters are anywhere close to me (an hours drive) so use my gues figures to create your own….

  46. on October 16, 2006 at 4:52 pm biologyfool

    My quite scientific guess is:
    388

It would have been helpful if you had listed everything you had eaten since the 1st of Oct, but I made an educated guess. 🙂

Hopefully you didn’t send 15 jars of salsa to college with eldest daughter.

[…] 0- the number of pictures I’ve been able to view lately on blogspot blogs. Heidi, Shawnda, Shana, and others–why are your pictures not showing up, peeps? To make it more upsetting, Shana currently has nursery pictures and Shawnda has a NEW baby! I must see photos! 2- the number of books I’ve bought on Amazon this month. (Ok, not true, actually I’ve bought 2+1, but I needed the three for this: 3-the number of hours it took one unnamed-but-intelligent child to do 1 easy lesson of math. Also the number of hours I tried more (or less!) successfully to smiling sweetly while repeating a gazillion variations of “Pay attention, honey” when really I wanted to beat my head on any nearby hard surface. 4- the number of boxes I have full of newspaper-wrapped green tomatoes in my garage right now. 5- the number of books-to-read currently piled in a precarious heap on my book stand printer next to my computer 6- the number of boxes of newspaper-wrapped onions I have in my garage right now. 7- the number of times I replaced the throw pillows on the couch today. 8- the number of cucumbers in my fridge right now. 11- the number of Christmas presents I’ve already bought. 12- the time it says on my clock right now, meaning I really oughta go to bed. 32- the number of pictures I took today. 54- the number of RED tomatoes hubby artfully placed on a table RIGHT outside my kitchen window so I ‘won’t forget about them.’ That I am definitely not canning. But that I probably will use in boatloads of spaghetti this week. (Eldest, now you know what to expect for dinner when you come home this weekend.) 88- the number of different people who commented on that one post last week. 100- the number of comments made by Brian (comment shower instigator #1) 140- the number of comments made by Sarah (comment shower instigator #2) 200- the number of words I still need to write for my other blog before I can go to bed. 318- the number of total dollars I spent on groceries last month. 540- the number of dollars I’ve spent on groceries so far THIS month. Ack! I’ll be lucky to stay under $700 at this rate. ?? And the number of jars in my pantry?? Not telling! Go guess if you haven’t already. […]

325 is my guess and there was nothing scentific about it. But I was quite impressed with how organized your pantry is!`

[…] There’s also the matter of the free movie tickets!! Fifty-four people left me guesses, and can you believe NO ONE got it exactly? However several people were very close. And the closest of the close was Carol (Frugal Finds From your Frugal Friend). […]
