Works for Me

December 13, 2006 by Mary Owlhaven

With eight kids in the house, it gets challenging to find time with my hubby. We decided years ago to claim the time after 9 pm as our own. When the kids were little, we’d just put them to bed.

Once they’re teenagers, though, the rules change. They still head off to their rooms, but they don’t have to go to bed right away. For an hour or two they can read or play on the computer or (quietly) wander into a siblings’ room to play cards.

One thing that makes this work really well for us is that the teenagers’ two bedrooms are upstairs, away from the younger kids’ rooms, so a little talk won’t disturb the little ones — or us– downstairs.

Ah, hubby time! Works for me!

Mary, we do this too, only our couple time starts around 8 p.m. because Snuggle Bed goes to be at 7:30 p.m. Of course, he’s only 2 years old, so he doesn’t have much of a choice at this point in time. 🙂 Great tip!

I’ve posted a 12 lbs ‘til Christmas WFMW tip.

You are wise, we put the kids to bed at 7pm when little, now our middle schoolers goes to bed at nine, but they always have to be in bed reading from 7 on. I’ve got to have some down time where I can unwind, it makes for a much better mother.

I cherish the time my husband and I have together after the kids go to bed. Sometimes it is all I can do to get to 7:30 p.m. Although, lately, it has been spent getting holiday stuff done. Thanks for reminding me to get us back on track 🙂 !!

That is a FABULOUS idea!!! I love it!!! Although….9pm is getting to be about that time that I’m ready for bed too : ( I think I’m going to have to learn to stretch out my wake time! : )
