People. These children are amazing. Here are a few snapshots from an exceptionally lovely day.
Our five year old finally has someone who shares her love of dressing up.
The plums are ripe– the kids ate at least 5 plums each –every day for days. And I still had enough left to make a dozen pints of jam.
We picked a wheelbarrow load of cucumbers. Yes, in one day.
Even the little girls helped slice cukes for pickling. (Yes, that is a real knife in the hands of the two year old. She cut cukes for half an hour and never cut herself once.)
Our new 11 year old spotted a lovely cabbage in the garden and promptly claimed it.
“I cook? Tonight?”
She and our new 9 year old then proceeded to whip out a really nice sauteed cabbage dish that went perfectly with our corn on the cob and tomatoes for dinner. John (ever the cautious type) at first held his breath when watching these 60-lb girls whipping out big knives to chop cabbage. But within seconds it was obvious the girls had done this before a few (hundred) times. Practiced, efficient motions.
Did you know that it is possible to puree tomatoes with nothing more than a knife? And get puree just as nice as with any food processor? Yup. I didn’t know it either. These kids are something else….
We’re enjoying every minute of getting to know them.
Life is good.
