sage advice

February 24, 2008 by Mary Owlhaven

Last night my 5 year old decided to tell a story, which the 3 year old listened to with rapt attention. After her big sister’s story wound down, the 3 year old jumped in with her own story, but was immediately interrupted.

“You’re supposed to start with ‘once upon a time’,” advised the 5 year old. “That’ll help it go easier.”

Oh the big sisterly advice…. reminds me of when my then 2 .5 year old (now almost 8) was just starting potty training and my 4.5 year old (now almost 10) told her “don’t worry if you have an accident, mommy will just give you new underpants”.

Well you can guess what happened. I had a stack of nice pretty cotton training pants all stacked up and ready for the day. My 2.5 year old promptly told me she had an accident. I asked her why she didn’t tell me she had to go. Her answer – she wanted new underpants.

Did she tell her that all stories should end with “and they lived happily ever after” as well? That’s my philosophy!
