What I’d give for a really good swimsuit

May 29, 2008 by Mary Owlhaven

Thinking of all the time I’ll be spending at the pool this summer, the other evening I spent a longlonglong time at LandsEnd.com looking at swimsuits. I must have had a dozen windows open at any given time, plus one of my older daughters at my elbow much of the time for advice. This is a monumental decision: I expect a lot from a swimsuit. I want something stylish, slimming, supportive, slimming, durable, slimming, and finally that most elusive quality: just enough but not too much coverage. Just because I’m not bikini material doesn’t mean I want to look like a granny for pity sakes.

I finally settled on this swim top. It came in the mail today. I couldn’t rip the package open fast enough, and all I can say is I love it! It has a perfect non-revealing neckline, a decent length, enough support for my not-tiny figure, and cute flattering fabric. I also love the non-frumpy thin straps. I loved it so much that I didn’t want to take it off once I put it on.

It was plenty pricey for a usually frugal sort like me, so much that I opted not to buy the $48 Lands End bottom. Instead I’m going to look around for a cute pair of athletic shorts which hopefully won’t cost more than $20 and that I’ll be able to pick in a length that I like. But I am just thrilled to have such a nice solution for at least half of the suit!

that is really cute. and how cool that you were able to get a bathing suit you like on line. (i hate trying on bathing suits!)

What a great idea to reduce the cost of a Land’s End suit. I can’t really justify that much on myself either, but I do love LE for swimsuits.

The top you picked is darling — did you get the red?

We are joining the Y here, and I think that would actually be one I wouldn’t mind wearing in public.

    Thanks Mary!

    EBAY EBAY EBAY

I love Lands Ends suits and you can usually find them ” new” on ebay at a fraction of the cost…..

They have really flatttering three peice skirted bathing suits

I was just looking at that suit the other day. I’m still trying to decide between it with a black mini swimskirt or a suit I saw at Eddie Bauer (more $$ so that’s less of an option!).

You know, it is a huge struggle to find just the right bathing suit–especially when you are attempting to be modest. Because of my figure the immodest tiny ones look best (at least that is what my husband says) and the modest ones just look frumpy. (I am rather small and curvy and those little dress styles ones that I long for look ridiculous on me.) The little skirts–which I love, look horrid and make it look like I am hiding tons of bulk. I LOVE Land’s End try it on feature–where I learned that all the suits I thought would be perfect were perfectly awful on my body type and also learned that there was a suit, one, single, suit that would suit me well and still be modest and would actually fit (I am long on top which makes finding a one piece nearly impossible). So yeah, I feel for you and know exactly where you are coming from.

This is really beautiful. I need to figure out something. Some friends of ours normally give us the keys to their pool every summer, but this year it isn’t up and running.

If I have to go to a public place, I’m gonna need a nice suit!

you should worry less about the slimming capabilities of the swimsuit, and even less about coverage…

it’s all about finding your most attractive bits of your body and finding the right SHAPE of swimsuit to draw attention to THOSE areas, instead of focusing so much on those “problem areas” that actually only make women what we are. 🙂

Very cute! My experience with Lands’ End is that when you figure the “cost per summer”, the fact that their suits last forever makes them the better buy in the long run! I have had to replace LE suits, not because they wore out, but because I had changing needs in a suit (namely coverage)…

That’s really cute Mary. I love the Red.

I always buy my suits at lands end. What a great idea to just get a top and wear shorts… I spend a lot of time at the pool but have to get up a lot and even run teens to work. Sometimes a friend will show up on the fly and modesty is so important these days. Thanks!

    Good shopping!

I’ve swam in a pair of athletic shorts for years.

That’s funny. I was up in the middle of the night with a sick nursling doing the same thing and nearly settled on the same suit! I still haven’t take the “plunge,” though. Thanks for the encouragement!

I LOVE that top! I’m tempted to buy one myself. It is adorable. Love the idea for buying the shorts elsewhere, too.

That is the exact top that I plan on buying, but in the blue.
I was thinking that maybe I could find a coordinating skort bottom around town. We’ll see. Love that Lands End allows us more mature moms to still feel “with it” with all their accomodating styles and colors.

Adorable! 🙂 Love your choice! Comfortable and worry free!

Cute top! I can’t stand buying swimsuits, and I’m, uhm, endowed, shall we say, so every item of clothing I buy has to pass “The Boobage” test, and I can’t test things online. But, I do really like that top! Looks like something I’d buy. Pricey but if it fits and does what it should, worth it!

Oh I like it! I have a Land’s End suit too. Their stuff is just terrific quality!

I got the same Land’s End suit a few weeks ago!!! Not very frugal for me but it was not an item I wanted to skimp on.

I LOVE Lands End swimsuits. They are the only place I get one. I ordered about 20 suits and then tried them on at home. You can make returns to Sears so it was a cinch to do and didn’t cost me return shipping.
