My favorite first day of school memory is meeting my first grade teacher. She had an obsession with Garfield and the whole school room was decorated in orange and Garfield. I thought she was SO neat. She’s the only teacher I remember fondly from elementary school. My dad has a picture of me with her and we’re standing in front of a Garfield wall hanging. LoL.

One memory has always been wearing my back to school clothes first day, despite the climate at the time. Usually that meant wearing blue jeans and a heavy shirt and sweating something awful. Does everyone do that or was I just weird? Loved new clothes even back then.
Here’s my blog post: http://mommyspace.blogspot.com/2008/07/back-to-school-lands-end-backpack.html
I remember I had a new headband that I was super proud to be able to wear to school that first day. Coming in from lunch recess later I noticed my headband was missing so I ran back out to the field by the jungle gym and other equipment and searched everywhere for it. I couldn’t find it at all. I was completely devastated. Not a great first day for me. (The funny thing is that for my entire life it still really sits hard on me when I lose something.)
ps. I sent those emails I mentioned!
Thanks for the giveaway. I’m looking forward to reading this blog.
My first day of middle school was probably the most nerve wracking day of my life! I remember it being such a HUGE school and I had to change classes and I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. I also had almost NO friends in my new school. It was rough.
Here’s my blog post:
http://slackermomof3.blogspot.com/2008/07/giveaway-extravaganza.html
We moved to a new town the summer before my 6th grade year. I only knew one girl, Stephanie, and didn’t really know her that well. I had a neat new white shirt and a new pair of Zena jeans that had a belt that fastened by putting a little metal bar into a slot and then twisting it. When I got to my classroom, I saw Stephanie’s face and she immediately motioned to my belt. To my horror, it had come undone and was flopping around. Thank goodness Steph brought it to my attention before anyone else saw it!
On the first day of kindergarten my mom was a nervous wreck. My kindergarten was a full day. I had never been to preschool or daycare so this would be our first full day apart.
She packed my lunch, rolled up a blanket and pillow for nap time, and we headed off to school.
We held hands as we walked towards the classroom.
My mom was telling me how much fun I was going to have. That if I missed her to tell the teacher and they would call her. You know the typical mom things.
As the door to the classroom opened a whole new world for me did too. There were kids my age playing, the smell of playdough and new classroom drifted my way. The walls were filled with exciting images like animals, colors and the alphabet. My teacher introduced herself. Although I don’t remember her name, I do remember her safe smile and her long, beautiful hair.
Life as I knew it would never be the same. I hugged my mom and ran into my classroom never looking back.
Years later, my mom told me that I didn’t even hesitate. I wasn’t scared or shy. I was ready.
She watched me outside the door and although she felt sad with her little girl growing up, she knew I would be okay.
The first memory I have from my school days is riding the bus for the first time. My cousin and I (next door neighbors) were starting Kindergarten at the same time. I was so afraid of riding the bus that my mother got on and rode to my cousin’s house with me. Once my cousin got on I was fine, then my mother got off and walked home. I was the very first one to be picked up and the bus looked so big and empty. Thanks mom!
I love your blog, I just wanted to tell you that I read it every single day since I found it! I am a mother of 4 sons, so I understand big families, and I really really would like to adopt, too, but right now that’s not financially in the cards for us. I try to live viacariously through you!
I grew up in a really small town, only about 7,000 people. One of my first day of school memories is that when I was in first grade (We didn’t have kindergarten in our state that was in the public schools back then), we got out of school one day at an earlier time than usuall, I think we got out at 2 instead of 3:30 that day for a teacher meeting. My mom didn’t come pick me up and didn’t come, and so the principal took me home (you couldn’t do that now, could you?).
My parents had forgotten that we got out early that day and gone to eat a special lunch in a town 20 miles away with my sister who was 4. Of course they were horrified that they had forgotten me, but the funny part is that it didn’t bother me in the least, I was just patiently waiting for them on my front step with a sucker my principal had given me. But my sister, oh, dear, it scarred her for life! She would go to the office every single day when she started 1st grade with a stomach ache because she was afraid Mom and Dad would forget to pick her up!
She was probably 10 or so when she was old enough to tell us what was wrong with her in 1st grade! We knew she loved her 1st grade teacher, and had no idea that them forgetting to pick me up scarred her for life instead!
LOL Kids are funny, aren’t they?
I’m putting your contest on my blog and boy, could I use the backpack! I have 4 sons starting school in 3 weeks, a 9th grader, 7th grader, 4th grader and kindergartner!
I just turned fourteen and was going into my freshmen year of high school. I was scared to death! I didn’t like change. I was used to having the same teachers year after year and the same classmates too. They had grown up with me and knew the reason I limped, had crooked fingers, wore splints and sometimes used crutches. No explanation needed.
I started off my high school years on crutches. Back in the olden days we didn’t have backpacks like kids do now. I wasn’t sure how I was going to get around that big school carrying my books. I got to school early that morning and was determined to get three classes worth of books and folders so I wouldn’t have to keep coming back to my locker which was quite a walk. I was stubborn and too prideful to ask someone new for help.
I was pleased as punch when I managed to get all my books and folders for those three classes. As I was walking with them I tripped and fell. All my things went flying everywhere! Because of my arthritic knees I could not get on the floor to gather up my stuff or even bend down to get it either.
I started to cry. What was I going to do?
A teacher walked out of his room and started collecting all my things. He got them all put together and called for a girl named Angie. He asked her if she would mind helping me to my class. She was quiet like me, but smiled and said sweetly, “Sure!”.
From that day forward she helped me to every single class for the next four years. We became best friends and went through good and bad times together. We needed each other.
God’s timing was perfect. Angie taught me to be humble and ask for help. And most importantly to accept it. I was able to witness to her and share the gospel!
It was a win/win situation for both of us for which I am forever thankful!

Mary, I don’t know if you have to approve a comment before you post it or not. I’ve tried three times I think and my post for the contest won’t show up! I hope it is justbecause you have to give approval first!
I am sorry for submitting it so many times!
As a child, I loved the first day of school every year! The smell of new books, the box full of new pencils and supplies, the new lunchbox and new outfit and a special breakfast (as opposed to cold cereal most of the time!) were always such a thrill. Everything seemed so fresh and exciting adventures were just around the corner. (Now I homeschool my kids, and I still love the first day of school! π )
Great question and great giveaway! My first day of school (long, long ago), I remember being so excited to go to my brother’s school. He was older, but I didn’t understand that he and I would not be together. At recess I cried and cried because I could not find him, but some big girls (2nd graders!) were nice to me. They asked me what grade my brother was in, but I didn’t know.
After school, I made it a point to ask my mother in case anyone asked me again what grade he was in. But, alas, no one ever did.
I was so disappointed! Soon, however, I was busy with my little friends. I loved school and could not wait until I was in 2nd grade so I could take home my spelling book.
I’ve been in school (now a teacher) ever since. Years later, I’m still in school and still a book nerd. lol
On my first day of kindergarten, my teacher accidently put me in the wrong group; I was put in the “after school care” bunch instead of the “to be picked up by mom” line. I knew I was in the wrong group but didn’t want to cause trouble (my mom told me to follow Ms. Wall’s intructions…..)
Sure enough, we “after schoolers” all went down to the gymna-teria-torium for our snack of cookies and milk. I patiently munched away until my carpool finally figured out where I was and came to get me. I let her be the “bad guy” and yell at Ms. Wall for sending me to the wrong place. Those were some great cookies π
My first day of school was soon after my 5th birthday and I was the youngest in my class. I was small and felt scared getting on that big bus. My parents sent me off together with tears in their eyes.
My dad’s pharmacy was just a block from the bus stop so the first day, and each day thereafter, I walked to his store after school. We went out for a Dr. Pepper and chips – the same snack every day.
This year my older kids will have their first day of school while my husband and I are in Ethiopia to pick up our beautiful twins. I’m heart broken about missing their first day. I’m thankful their grandparents will be there to see them off.

We’re leaving for Ethiopia in less than 3 weeks!
I normally don’t enter contests because I never win but I couldn’t resist to tell you my first memory of school. My dad was stationed in Colorado Springs, CO and I was going to kindergarten. One day my friend, Richard and I were at recess and we had heard that one of Richard’s sisters was in the nurses office with the measles. We were so curious but we weren’t allowed in the building during recess. I remember a big kid (probably a kid in the 4th grade) opened the door and Richard and I went in on our hands and knees. The two of us crawling through the halls down to the nurses station. The only thing was, we got caught and I remember just begging our teacher not to tell my parents. I think we had to stay in at recess for a week or so. It’s a fun memory. I can’t believe I did that.
Thanks for allowing me to share my memory
My first day of school was right after my 5th birthday. I felt small on that big school bus. My parents walked me to the bus stop and watched me drive away with tears in their eyes.
My first day, and every day thereafter, I walked to my dad’s store after school. Together we walked to the bowling alley for a Dr. Pepper and some corn chips. We ate the same thing every day.
This year my kids will have their first day of school without me there. My husband and I will be in Ethiopia picking up our beautiful twins. My parents and my husband’s parents will be there to see them off on their first day. Despite missing their parents, I hope they feel as loved as I did on my first day of school.

We leave for Ethiopia in 18 days! Thanks Mary for all your wonderful tips.
I remember the day I started second grade. I thought first grade was so difficult that I didn’t think I could possibly make it another year. I stood at my mom’s dressing table just barely tall enough to peak over the edge and watched her finish her make up for work. I told her I didn’t think I could handle another year, and she told me “sure you can, honey, you can do anything you want to do.” It was fleeting, and probably off the cuff, for her, but that one phrase of encouragement has stuck in my mind all these years.
(And I made it through second grade, too.)
My first day of school memory that sticks out the most is from the 5th grade. I was the new kid and I picked a desk to sit at as instructed. A girl from my class came up and said that her friend was going to sit there. I told her I’m sorry, I guess I got here first and stayed. I surprised myself by being so bold but I was nervous and didn’t want to be pushed around. That girl became one of my dearest friends that I still have to this day.
My post – http://heartchild-am.blogspot.com/2008/07/great-blog-and-contest.html
I remember riding home on the bus that first day (52 years ago!). The little boy nextdoor and I had been buddies for life, so it was only natural for me to stop on my way out and hug him goodbye! I mean our parents had been having us hug goodbye our whole lives! No one told me that the bus was different! Middle schoolers and high school kids erupted with howls and laughter! I was so embarassed. But many years later my little buddy was killed while serving in the Army…and I no longer wish that hug had never happened. I am so glad that I have that memory burned into my brain. I hugged him goodbye one final time and I just wish I could give him another hug.

I love this blog! I’m new to reading it and truly enjoy it! My first day of school memory is of Kindergarten. It was 1977 and I was in my little polyester dress with a smiley face on the front that looks like the Walmart smiley face sticker they give you at the door. I was carrying my cardboard school box with all my supplies in it and was walking across the street to school with my little white knee socks and buster brown mary janes.
My mom called me back to the the house in a frantic voice and said, “Angie, I need to tell you something before you go to school today.” “What Mommy?” I asked. “Honey, I need to tell you that your name really isn’t Angie, it’s Angela. And that is how the teacher is going to call you in roll.” she said. “WHAAAT? My name isnt Angie…..how the heck do you spell ANGELA?!?!?!”
So that was my first day of school in 1977. As I walked across the street in my new Buster Brown’s carrying my cardboard school box, reciting over and over in my head A..N..G..E..L..A!

My strongest first day of school memory is from the 5th grade. I was the new kid and I picked a desk to sit at as I was instructed by my new teacher. When I sat down a girl came up to me and said that her friend was going to sit there. I told her “I’m sorry, I guess I got here first”. I was surprised by my boldness, I chalked it up to being so nervous. That girl became a dear friend that I still have today.

I have very few childhood memories so at first this was hard for me. Most of my memories of growing up don’t actually start until I was in the 5th grade. However I do have a very clear memory of my first day of school ever.
Kindergarten, 1969, Texas in September. Yes, it was back when school started after Labor Day. I can remember walking into my classroom and seeing right off the bat a cage containing hamsters. Two of them…..a black and white one and a brown and white one. At that time I didn’t have the fears I have now and was totally fascinated with those hamsters. Everything that came after that moment is almost a total blur. I do know that I met my first best friend that day…we remained friends until I moved away in fifth grade. Do I remember the teachers name? No, but I do remember those hamsters and my best friend Donna. Those were the days.
I posted about this giveaway on my blog.
My favorite school memory was shopping for school supplies with my oldest two kids. My mom always worked at a local drugstore, had the school supply lists and helped us find everything.
We would often go to the drive-in for an ice-cream cone after we finished.
Unfortunately, she died before the other 4 kids got to enjoy the same tradition.
I still enjoy school-supply shopping and think of her every year.
On my 1st day of “big school”, I wore a dress my mom made for me and had my picture made by the sign at the front entrance of the school.
2 years ago, my son had his picture made by the same sign on his 1st day of school.
2 weeks from now, my daughter will have her picture made…you guessed it…by the same sign on her 1st day of school!
Thanks for helping remind me of a special day and a special place!

I can remember a friend of mine playing on the play ground when all of a sudden she stuck her tongue on the monkey bars and her tongue just stuck there and her screaming because it hurt. I ran to the teacher and told her of the problem and while she was running for water my fiend could no longer stand the pain and pulled her tongue back leaving the top layer of skin on the monkey bars. I learned probably one of the best lessons that day! Never Never stick your tongue on anything cold and metal~! I have not thought of that in many many years. Thanks for reminding me to remember.

I don’t remember much about my first day of school. I was 2 and 1/2. I remember hiding under the table crying for my mom.
What a fun idea! I put my memory on my blog and the link to the giveaway.
The first day of school I remember is the year, after we moved into the country. We lived 5 miles from town on 5 acres. I had no contact with my friends and could hardly wait until Labor Day weekend was over to get back and see everyone and catch-up on all the summer activities. I always dreaded the first question my teacher would ask, “please share your favorite summer experience.” I always thought I never had anything exciting to share but as I look back my summers in the country where awesome. We had so much freedom, more than my kids have ever had today. It took me a few minutes to really think back all those years, its not memories I visit often because having 12 kids it seems to be about their memories now. Thanks for allowing me a trip into my past for a few moments.
Mine isn’t the happiest, but it is the one that comes most readily when thinking of back-to-school. One year, I was decked out in my “fancy” new clothes, and for the first time ever I also had a perm. I was walking to school, and two kids passed me going in the other direction. I overheard one of them say to the other, “Wow, she’s ugly!” I don’t think I really was, but at the time it was devastating. I haven’t had a perm since, either π
School is fun as long as its Friday. Friday is craft day.
My first day of school in America was in North Platte Nebraska. I was 4 and didn’t speak a word of English! All I remember was that the school house was red and inside there was a play dollhouse that I loved – especially the kitchen area where I would pretend to cook and fry American pancakes in! You don’t need to communicate with words when you’re playing “house” with other little girls….just pretend to cook and feed them!
My favorite first day of school memory…does it have to be mine? Because all I can come up with is Matt’s first day of 2nd grade (last year). The night before I realized “oh my gosh, I never went shopping” and he didn’t have a NEW outfit to wear…like it’s some kind of requirement?? So I send DH off to go shopping, shoes, shirt, shorts, etc. Next morning, Matt is so excited that he dresses himself, all in old clothes (but he picked them out himself) and when I told him “no, no, Dad bought you new stuff last night” and handed him the bag…he said, “no thanks, I’ll wear them tomorrow” Jeez!
Here’s the link to my blog…linking to your blog: http://shellyblake.blogspot.com/2008/07/first-day-of-school.html
I remember taking my son to school on his first day of kindergarten. He really didnt want to be there, as he is really shy. My husband ended up having to go with him everyday for 3 days, and slowly back off until he was okay with going by himself. The plus in that? My husband is a big guy, so noone picked on my son. They were so scared of his dad!
oops, forgot to link over to you when I posted a response here. It’s done now.
Come over and check out my giveaway as well. Everyone is welcome!
There were two kindergarten classes at my elementary school. On the first day of school all of the children were invited to sit down on the floor with parents lined up all along the perimeter of the rooms (the two classrooms had the accordian partition type dividers).
After an introduction, one of the teachers began calling out names, and inviting those children to come with her. I listened carefully, hoping I would be in the same class with the one other girl I knew.
I wasn’t.
She was called to join that teacher, and I was left behind with the other teacher.
Turns out that girl and I were never very close friends, and I LOVED my kindergarten teacher, so it all worked out for the best anyway.
My first day of 6th grade, I was so excited to finally be in with the “big kids” and I woke up to a wet bed! I was so embarrassed. I hadn’t wet the bed in years! I was so embarrassed that I didn’t tell my mom until later that day- gross, I know!
I remember every first day of school was exhausting because I would barely sleep (out of nervousness) the night before!
Since we homeschool, the first day is always so busy, but then we settle into a routine by the end of the week π
I would love to win this for one of my 7 kids!!

I would love to win a backpack for my 14 yo!
first day of school: I remember the year my parents took me to Hawaii and I missed the first day of school! the first day I did go, I wore a Hawaii shirt, my white shorts and showed off my tan π
we homeschool, so the first day of school is pretty busy, but then we settle in a schedule by the end of the week.
my oldest uses a backpack when he teaches Character First in the public school and my 2nd oldest will be doing the same soon, so she needs a backpack!
My first day of school memory is one of lots of pictures!
My mother loves to take pictures! As a mother, I appreciate it, as a child I didn’t. So remember being excited but irritated that we had to take so many pictures before I could actually start school!
Great contest. Doubt I’ll win, but fun to join in!
I know this is pretty pathetic but I don’t really have any first day of school memories. All that comes to mind are pictures that my mom took. I guess that is a good reason to take pictures and lots of them, but then write the stories that go with them as well.

Hi, I mentioned your giveaway on my blog. What a great idea!
When I first began pre-kindergarten, I would cry everyday when my mother dropped me off. And then I would cry everyday when she picked me up. That is because in the mornings we had to sit in our desks and do book work. We only got to play after lunch which is when my mom would pick me up, cutting my play time short. I guess four years old is a little young for sitting still and listening to a teacher drone on. Let them play, I say.

I remember one year when I went to the first day. I was so upset that I did not know anyone in my class. I was crying and just really not in a good mood. Finally, a friend from the year before came walking into the class. I immediately stopped crying. I was so glad to see her. Not much of a memory, but still one I love.

Oy, it’s been a really long time since I’ve had a first day of school myself π I do remember my first day of high school–I’d graduated eight grade from a small Catholic school and gone onto a relatively huge public high school (3,000 students). I was so overwhelmed, I wanted to turn right around and head home! Thankfully, things improved after that, and I managed to get through four years π
Thanks for the fun giveaway!
I will never forget the night before the first day of Jr. High. I didn’t sleep a wink because I was so excited. But…I was so sleepy the first day of school, the excitement quickly died!
Blogged ya here… http://mistyreviews.blogspot.com/2008/07/win-land-ends-backpack.html
My first day of school (Grade K) I cried. I could not stop crying, my mom cried. I was so scared. But eventually by the middle of the day, I finally started to like it.
My first memory from school was the first day of kindergarten. The bus picked us up in the morning as scheduled, but never came to take us home that afternoon! Can you imagine the terror of all the little 5 year olds? I didn’t want to go back after that, but of course, had to.
AWESOME BACKPACK MY DAUGHTER WOULD LOVE IT!
